In-Person Worship Guidelines

We have consulted and read many of the documents and guidelines published by our denominational relationships, the Center for Disease Control, and our local governments. Based upon your feedback from the survey, our leadership team and pastors feel we can safely open the sanctuary well within the 25% seating capacity for our building. Nevertheless, we have decided to continue our worship and ministry through 3 formats:

1.     Sanctuary Worship:  We have decided to open on the sanctuary on Sunday, May 24th, 2020, but with several limitations based upon guidance from our local and state authorities.

2.     Online Worship:  We recognize many will continue online, and so please know we will continue to make the online experience interactive and worshipful.

3.     Meeting in Homes:  We are working with our community groups to coordinate with their groups if people would like to meet in homes for the next several weeks to watch the worship online together. Groups may coordinate fellowship, food, and serving the Lord’s Supper together. Groups should gather with 10 or less people in a home.

For those who choose to attend physically at Canal Street, we will have the following guidelines in place for a “phase 1” opening. Please keep in mind that these guidelines are primarily for the safety of other people. Please read the following carefully. While we will have several limitations on us during the next several months, we want to go ahead and start creating a safe environment where people can eventually return to worship that is calming and worshipful.

Individual guidelines:

  • At-risk populations or those who have been exposed or could possibly be exposed should not attend in person.

  • If you feel sick, have a temperature above 100.4, have any COVID-19 symptoms, or have possibly been exposed to someone that is sick, we ask you not attend in person for at least 14 days.

  • Every person must wear a mask for their time in the building.

  • Each person should sanitize with hand sanitizer when they come into the entrance of the church. Sanitizer will be provided.

  • Individuals may give an “elbow” greeting, “air handshake,” hand over the heart, or a verbal greeting.

  • Please follow greeter and usher instructions as necessary.

  • We will not conduct the “greeting time” or “passing of the peace.” Peace will be exchanged verbally from the stage.

  • While inside the building try to maintain a distance of 6 feet, even when passing people in the aisles or hallways.

  • Individuals and families will sit at least 6 feet apart. Please follow seating guidance from the greeters at the door.

  • No hospitality will be served during phase 1. But bottled water will be provided.

Childcare and Nursery:

  • No nursery or childcare will be provided during phase 1. We will continue to have a special children and youth message during the worship (alternating each week).

  • During phase 2, occasional nursery will be provided, based upon volunteer availability.

Lord’s Supper:

Cleaning and Sanitation:

  • After each worship, the sanctuary and bathrooms will be cleaned with a detailed checklist.

  • After other groups use the building for worship, the same cleaning will take place.

  • The ELC will open on May 18. A professional cleaning company has been hired to clean daily.

  • Bulletins and other information pamphlets will not be used during this time.

  • Offering baskets are available at both ends of the alter area. You may deposit your tithe/offering after you've received communion. You may also give online.

Some have asked what if we have to close back down? If that happens, we will be prepared to do so. However, this is why we want to emphasize gathering in home groups as well as continuing our online worship. Whatever happens, we will continue worshipping as a family together!

We encourage you to choose one of the three options of worship that is appropriate for your situation and health. Thank you for taking the time to read and adhere to the above guidelines. We will publish more guidelines if and when we get to the next phase. We look forward to the day when we may all gather together again!
